Single-Ply TPO Roofing System 

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply roof membrane constructed from durable ethylene-propylene rubber. TPO roofing systems combine the durability of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber with the performance of hot-air welded seams. They are resistant to ozone and algae and environmentally-friendly and safe to install.

TPO is highly resistant to tears, impacts and punctures.  This means that your building can flex without concern for rips and tears.   

TPO roofing is available in white, light gray and black with a thickness of 45 mil (.045"), 60 mil (.060") or 90 mil (.090”) fleece-back product.  Qt Commercial offers large sheet sizes ranging from 10’ x 50' up to 50’ x 150’.

Installation of a TPO roof can be done in one of three methods: fully-adhered, mechanically-attached or ballasted.  Fully-adhered means that the roof is glued to the substrate using a special adhesive.  Mechanically-attached membranes are those that use a special screw-type fastener to secure it. Ballasted means the membrane is loose laid over the top of the roof, sealed at all penetrations and around the perimeter, and then a ballast of smooth, round, river rock 2" - 3" in diameter is applied.

A TPO roofing system that is property installed has service life ranging from about 10 to 20 years, depending on the type of installation.

Single-Ply PVC Roofing System

PVC RoofPVC (polyvinyl chloride) is another thermoplastic roofing system. These roofs provide excellent weathering characteristics and are highly resistant to ultraviolet light and most chemicals. The membranes have a reinforced scrim and are puncture and tear resistant. PVC roofs have outstanding seam strength because the sheets are welded together using hot air. A PVC roofing system is well suited  for second generation (roof-over) applications.

Single-ply PVC membrane is similar in appearance to TPO, however PVC has been around a lot longer than TPO. The methods of PVC membrane installation are very similar to that of the TPO roof.  A PVC roofing system requires a slightly greater investment than that of a TPO roof.

Single-ply rubber roofs use extremely durable, high-performance compounds that stand up beautifully to even the harshest snowy winters and scorching hot summers of Minnesota.

EPDM - The Green Roof

Answering the concerns of tenants, property owners and managers who have been pushing to make their buildings environmentally sustainable, EPDM is a sustainable roofing option in more ways than one.  It is known for its long life and durability, which reduces the long-term costs of replacement and repairs.

It’s an energy saver!  EPDM is available in black or white.  These color options help reduce heating or cooling costs.  In northern climates, buildings with a dark colored EPDM roofing save more energy than buildings with white roofing systems. The dark color of a rubber roof absorbs the energy of the sun and in turn can help the building retain heat.   In southern climates, buildings with white EPDM roofing save on energy costs through the reflective nature of the white surface.

Built-Up Roofing Systems

Built-up roofing systemsBuilt-up roofing (BUR) systems are also referred to as “tar and gravel” or “asphalt and gravel” roofs.  At QT Commercial, we understand that layers are the key to having a built-up roof system last for years to come.  We place layer upon layer of insulation and asphalt as well as alternating layers of overlapping, reinforcing materials to ensure that no moisture gets through.

FACT:  Over time, built-up roofs have been proven to be one of the most durable and cost-effective roofing options for low-pitch roofs.

Longer System Life

Each ply of a built-up roofing system contains a mat of glass fiber reinforcement (most single-ply systems contain no reinforcement at all).  When multiple plies are combined and sandwiched between layers of water-resistant asphalt, the result is a longer lasting roof.

Limited Roof Movement

All roofs expand and contract.  Single-ply roofs respond with elongation, but over time these systems can lose their elasticity, resulting in buckling, ridges and splits. A built-up roof, however, limits movement with a high tensile strength in excess of the recommended 200 lbs./sq. in.  The potential for fracturing is eliminated, and the built-up roof will last longer.

Superior Water Resistance

Multiple layers of reinforcement in a built-up roof offer several opportunities to prevent leaks compared to single-ply membranes that only offer one chance at preventing a leak.  Plus, there's nothing quite like asphalt when it comes to making a roof resist water.  Asphalt is the glue that holds a built-up roof together.  It also seals and protects the entire roof, delivering up to five times greater water-resistant thickness.

Easier Installation

On a hot built-up roof, the multiple plies are fused together using hot-mopped asphalt to create a monolithic barrier.  Every inch is firmly and completely adhered over the entire roof area, without the need for ballast or fasteners. Single-ply systems require ballast or fasteners because they are generally laid loose.  Ballast (such as stones) increases structural load and can be blown off by strong winds and fasteners create less stress points and additional opportunities for moisture leakage.

Using roof slate will be one of the wisest decisions you make because a slate roof is one of the most aesthetically pleasing and durable of all roofing materials.  It is dramatically formed by nature and transforms your building or home into a showcase.

When installed properly, slate roofs require relatively little maintenance and will last 40 to 75 years or longer depending on the type of slate employed, roof configuration, and the geographical location of the property.  Roof slate is a natural product and no two pieces are exactly alike making it a naturally rich design.
